Visiting Hearten House? These tips will help.
How can I find you?
Our maps apps have a tendency to lead us astray. Depending on your app’s preferences, you can find us at
314 W 300 South, Salt Lake City, 84101
314 W Broadway, Salt Lake City, 84101
And we’re suite 222 once you get here.
We’re located above the world-famous main location of Caputo’s, a deli/restaurant and import grocery store. We’re directly across the street to the North from Pioneer Park, where the Salt Lake Farmers’ Market holds its warm weather events.
Look for the Hearten House sign and the orange door at the top of the exterior staircase to the left of the big Caputo’s sign.
Where can I park?
DO NOT PARK IN THE PARKING LOT DOWNSTAIRS IN FRONT OF HEARTEN HOUSE or in any lot on our side of the block. Those are reserved for other businesses and you will be towed.
You can find plentiful street parking on the 300 W block of Broadway. There is, however, a two-hour limit for that block.
Our recommended parking lot is on the North side of the SLC Pepper mural (https://goo.gl/maps/WdECoZdjKC8KPymRA) - last time we checked it was the most affordable.
Surrounding streets also offer plentiful street parking, we recommend parking to the north or east (vs. the south and west) if you have a choice. If you’d like covered parking, we recommend parking in the south garage at the Gateway, located a block NW of Hearten House.
Again, note that we do not use the retail parking lot in front of the building; that’s reserved for our downstairs neighbors.
Where can I eat?
Where to start? Obviously we can recommend anything from Caputo’s deli, including the life-changing meatball sandwich. In our same building is another favorite, Carlucci’s, a delightful bakery offering baked goods, great sandwiches, and coffee/beverages. Bruges next door offers Belgian waffles and fries; the Thai place next to it is perfectly fine.
There’s also Don Joaquín Street Tacos on 423 W 300 S, and we also recommend the Rose Establishment (235 S 400 W).
Within a few blocks you’ll find all kinds of excellent restaurants, including favorites like Chile-Tepin and Red Rock Brewing — both walkable. If you’re looking for something specific, just ask: we’re happy to recommend anything from family dining to the newest craft breweries (We highly recommend Slackwater SLC, about a four-minute drive south of us, with great pizzas).
Where can I stay?
Two hotels are half a block away from Hearten House:
Homewood Suites by Hilton - Salt Lake City Downtown
Residence Inn by Marriott - Salt Lake City Downtown
Many — and we mean many — others are within easy walking distance. We recommend you do a little homework and choose which hotel fits your budget, desired amenities, and transportation needs.
What else is there to do in Salt Lake City?
There’s more to do here than we can include on this page, but if you’ll let us know we’ll be happy to recommend some of our favorite places that line up with what you’d like to do.
What about accessibility accommodations?
If you desire mobility accommodations (we’re on the second floor of the building, and most folks come in through the exterior staircase), please let us know in advance and we will make appropriate arrangements.
We do have access to a freight elevator, and its use is restricted to authorized folks, so, again, please let us know in advance and we’ll arrange to help.
Why is this building so cool? And why is Hearten House decorated the way it is?
Hearten House is in a ~100-year-old tire warehouse building, so all of the charm and idiosyncrasies come along with that.
The building on the corner is the original Firestone retail building (there’s a historical plaque), and the two-story part of the building we’re in is the old warehouse portion. (There’s an interesting post here with a little more info.) Other sources say our building was the Nelson-Ricks Creamery (see page 152 in this PDF); at least the part of the building perpendicular to us must have been.
… and if you’d like to know more about Hearten House, its mission, and why it’s decorated and designed the way it is, just find one of us and we’ll be happy to tell you more about it. To make a long story short, we believe the space is an important part of the therapeutic experience.
